If monkey’s could bake they would be all over this recipe. But alas, there are no ovens in the jungle issue. I’m not even sure monkeys like chocolate, but I do know that humans do. And fudgy finger-sticky desserts. And decadent treats you’d never guess are sweetened with dates. And extra chocolate chips thrown in just because. Or at least this human does, and I’m pretty sure I’m not alone.
It's basically a pull-apart bread made up of soft spheres of sweet dough held together with gloriously ooey gooey chocolate. Words can barely do it justice, but trust me it’s amazeballs.
This recipe is completely date-sweetened from the bread dough to the ooey gooey chocolate in between. Well except the chocolate chip. Normally, monkey bread is made from little balls of dough rolled in cinnamon sugar and baked together in a bundt pan. But #everythingisbetterwithchocolate right?
The medjool dates are blended with the milk to make up the base of this blender dough, and dates + water + cacao powder is all that’s in the fudgy coating. The Medjool dates in this recipe take care of all the sweetness, so you don’t need to add any extra sugar. It also uses almond flour, which helps keep the bread lovely and moist – you really don’t want a dry dough when making monkey bread.
Making the balls will go a little something like roll → dunk→ coat → pan → try not to lick fingers between every dough ball. And then sprinkle with chocolate chips if you know what’s good for ya. Then just pop it in the oven and prepare yourself for the fudgy pan of lumpy chocolate joy you are about to be treated to!
While it bakes your house will smell wonderful, and when it emerges from the oven your mouth will be watering. It will be bubbling, sticky, sugary and delicious. To eat it, you tear the bread piece by piece – sort of like how little monkeys pick at their food. Put it on the table in front of your family and watch them tear it apart in seconds and fight over any remaining pieces. You have been warned. It will happen. It’s that good.
So are you ready to tap into your inner chocolate-obsessed messy melty monkey side?
