Have you tried mantou before? Mantou is a Chinese steamed bun, made with flour, water, and yeast. They may be plain or made with a sweet filling and are very similar to baos, but while baos are buns with filling, the term mantou is commonly used to refer to buns without fillings. Mantou is a staple of the Chinese and can be steamed or deep-fried too.
The texture of the mantou is not so fluffy as bao. Mantou texture is soft band fluffy, which makes it great for dipping. It also makes a tasty dessert. Mantou can also can have many varieties of flavour as you would like. As a child, I used to love deep fried mantou dipped in condensed milk. My mum ate two of these chocolate spiral steamed mantou straight after I took the photos!
These vegan chocolate spiral montou are made with plant milk, have a mild sweet and chocolate flavour and taste good even on its own! Mantou or Chinese plain steamed bun was my childhood favourite and still is. I remember having them for afternoon tea snacks. We call them Chinese version of dinner rolls and are often served warm, freshly steamed as a breakfast or snack item, or to accompany other dishes.
