Dubu Jorim (두부조림)

Are you a fan of asian food takeouts? This braised tofu recipe will make you want to eat in instead of ordering or going to the restaurants. This spicy Korean tofu called Dubu Jorim, which is tofu cooked and braised in a spicy and savoury sauce is one of my favourite. Everyone knows tofu is good for the body. Dubu Jorim ("Dubu" means tofu. "Jorim" means braising) gives a great flavour and a spicy kick to healthy tofu that could be somewhat dull to your taste buds. This dish is without a doubt, one of the most flavourful ways you can prepare a block of tofu, which is an incredible source of protein and other essential nutrients. The end result is amazing, and tastes just likes my favourite Korean restaurant.

Dubu Jorim is a spicy tofu dish braised in a savoury-spicy sauce and pan fried with caramelised onion, garlic, and green onions, making it juicy, a little spicy, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. It is one of the banchan's (side dishes) that appear often on Korean lunch or dinner table, and is a great substitute for a meat dish because of its high protein content and affordability. This dish, is often prepared with medium or firm tofu, so that the flavours of the broth are absorbed well, and it is served as a side or paired with rice. The tofu is braised to create a crunchy skin and a soft inside that can soak up the spicy braising sauce. When we use this technique with tofu it makes it crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.

Dubu Jorim is super easy to make and requires about 35 minutes of cooking or less. This dish is packed with savoury and spicy flavours, with an added hint of sweetness and tanginess. On the busier days when I don’t have much time to spend much time on dinner, this spicy tofu dish is often my go-to choice to be served over a bowl of steamed rice and some sautéed greens. It is also highly infused with flavor, which also makes it the ideal meal for when I don’t have much of an appetite. Personally, I love this tofu dish with a side of kimchi and some greens. It is also one of my lazy weeknight meals.
