Sloopy Joes Burger

Updated: May 24, 2019

We all need a few quick, easy, and inexpensive dinner ideas in our arsenal that our family is guaranteed to eat happily, right? This classic Sloppy Joes recipe fits the bill in every way: simple, quick to make, and a family favourite. This recipe comes together in roughly 30 minutes, including cooking your lentils! It’s so simple and quick that it’s sure to become a weeknight staple in your home. Easy recipes that you can make with everyday pantry items – that’s so my thing. Grab a fork, napkin and those tangy toppings, we’re getting sloppy y’all! I’ve wanted to try sloppy joes for a long time and I finally did it a few weeks ago. Oh my god! I think it’s one of the best burgers I’ve ever tried. I wish I had tried it before! The flavour is amazing and although it’s a messy experience, they’re easier to eat if you cook the filling long enough to get a thick paste, that way the sloppy joes won’t fall apart.

Did your parents ever make you sloppy joes growing up? Guess I’m one of those poor neglected souls who’s never known the messy saucy experience that is a sloppy joe. I've never had sloppy joes, vegan or not… poor poor me. I’ve actually never eaten a ‘real’ sloppy Joe, but from all the vegan versions I’ve seen, these burgers definitely looks the most ‘I want to grab this food out of the screen and eat it now’. Served with a homemade pretzel bun what could be any better? And while the store-bought sauce that rhymes with san-wich might make this meal even quicker, it’s got some less-than-ideal ingredients. After all, I tend to avoid high fructose corn syrup in my sweets, much less my dinner.

Lentils are one of my favorite dry-pantry staples to have around – for main meals or sides. We know lentils are packed with protein, but how about full of fibre? Yes! High in iron? Check. Thus they’re a smart choice for vegetarians and folks who are cutting back on their red meat. Some recipes are really tough to veganise. With others it can be done countless ways, and they all taste good. Sloppy Joes, for example. The sauce is the important part, and aside from that, all you need is some sloppy vegan food thing to put into your sauce. Cook it up, stuff it in a sandwich and relish in the deliciousness. It’ll add that ground beefy texture and some extra nutrition and no one will be the wiser. This is a perfect thing to serve to carnivores, because they won’t believe you when you tell them there is no meat. If you’re not super prepared, you can make it while the sloppy joes are cooking and freeze the extra to use later. Whether you add it or not, these are super tasty and filling.

Verdict: as the smell began to hit my nostrils, to my surprise they were pleasant, smokey richness, grilled onions and peppers, almost like a bbq restaurant smell. I began to feel a little excitement in this mystery joe. I went in for the first bite and it was all over from there, seconds and thirds landed on my plate and my taste buds were chest bumping each other. Oh so dangggg good! And just when you may want to roll your eyes at a dish as simple as sloppy joes, I’m here to tell ya, this recipe is great! It can’t even be compared to the horrible stuff you buy in the can. There’s really not much more to say about this recipe, folks. Kids adore it, but adults love it, too. It’s so simple but oh-so-good. I’ve gone super “Americana” on us with this recipe. There’s hardly a more classic American meal then good ol’ sloppy joes! I don’t know a kid that would ever turn these down for dinner.
