If you aren’t a tofu lover already, you will be after you try this vegan Chinese takeout tofu & broccoli style. It has a tender texture and crispy crust along with a savoury, lightly spicy sauce and crunchy veggies. This Chinese takeout tofu was soooo easy. If you don’t like tofu, I dare you to try this technique and give it a try. The sauce can of course be customised according to your flavour preferences, but I think it comes out pretty close to what I think of when I imagine Chinese takeout.
Tofu is one of those ingredients I love because it has such a fun texture and you can use it so many different ways. In this tofu recipe, the tofu is pan fried until it’s nice, golden, and crispy on the outside yet soft inside. It then is braised in a savoury, lightly spicy sauce loaded up with fresh aromatics and vegetables. I cooked the tofu longer and gave it a little brown, which gave it an even more takeout-like experience. This really amped up the flavour and texture!
With the addition of a cornstarch slurry, the sauce gets all sticky and gooey and absolutely everything you would want in takeout food. It’s slightly sweet, but the sweetness isn’t overpowering! (Trust me, because I really don’t like sickly sweet sauces for savory dishes.)
You could serve this takeout tofu and broccoli as a side dish in a takeout-inspired feast, or over jasmine rice for a hearty vegan meal.
