Date-Sweetened Banana Bread

Updated: Jun 4, 2019

There’s always a sense of comfort that comes along with enjoying thick a slice of banana bread and a tall glass of milk. It is to me like sitting in front of a warm fire on a cold winter’s night. Waking up to the smell of my omma’s baked bread in the morning was always the best feeling. And when she made banana bread, oh boy was it going to be a good day. Back when I was young and learning to cook I tried out some banana bread recipes that were decent, before she took me aside, handed me a recipe card and informed me that it was the only banana bread recipe I’d ever need, because it was the best. Well, she was wrong about at least one thing, because I guess she didn’t know that a time would come when a I’d need a vegan banana bread recipe. But that’s not a big deal, because veganising the old family favourite recipe was no biggie! She has the best banana bread recipe. Ever. I hate to brag, But it’s true. Oh, and well, maybe she was wrong about it being the best, because, in fact, this vegan version is actually better.

Banana bread is one of those classic, all-American comfort food recipes that fills the whole house with warmth and makes everything better. Banana bread is magic. Over the years, I’ve tested oodles of vegan banana bread recipes and never settled on one that I thought was “it”. Too dense, too dry, too moist, lacking banana flavour, too sweet, not sweet enough, etc. It drove me nuts. Everybody needs a good banana bread recipe. What else can you do with too-ripe-to-eat bananas? Well, I guess you could freeze them for smoothies or healthy ice cream, if that’s your thing. But I make vegan banana bread. The problem with most other banana bread recipes is that they contain dairy, eggs, refined sugar, and oil — things that I do not consume or include in what I consider a healthy diet. So, I decided not only to veganise this nostalgic recipe but to also be sure it is a healthy version that I could guiltlessly consume and enjoy.

This healthy vegan banana bread is sweetened naturally with dates and bananas for a delicious, moist, and healthy morning or midday sweet bread. I added a scoop of vegan vanilla protein powder from @happwayau for added protein. The dates do double duty as sweetener and add moistness. The key, though, with any banana bread is using super ripe bananas, well-speckled with lots of black dots (the kind many people toss in the garbage — arrgh!). Prepare this easy quick bread recipe in just 10 minutes. Then sit back with a cup of tea and relax while you watch it bake.
